Obituary for Curtis Claude Coffee
Curtis Claude Coffee, 93, of Mount Carmel, IL passed away peacefully on Friday, July 7, 2017 at Linda White Hospice Center in Evansville, IN.  Curtis was born on March 4, 1924 in Mount Carmel, IL the son of Walter and Elsie May (Spurlock) Coffee. Curtis faithfully served his country as a United States Merchant Marine during World War II.  He went to sea in the ships to assist in making a difference during the War where he sailed the merchant marine fleet carrying troops, munitions and war material to Europe.  He was proud of his oath he took to serve, defend and protect our country.  Curtis served on troop ships where he witnessed vessels in the convoys attacked by submarines.  Curtis had a passion for history.  He was a member of the Wabash County Historical Society where he was very active in the community.  His greatest joy was volunteering on board the restored WWII USS Landing Ship Tank (LST) 325.  His involvement with LST 325 was his way of educating others and honoring all those he served with during World War II.  He was humble about his service but was sure to never leave home without wearing his WWII Veteran or LST 325 hat. Curtis also worked as a bus driver for a touring company where he made many friendships.  He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mount Carmel, VFW and American Legion.   Curtis was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree.  He will be missed by his family and friends.  Curtis will be remembered by his sons, Kim (Tina) Coffee of Gainesville, FL and David (Maria) Coffee of Plant City, FL; daughter, Claudette (Jim) Hennessy of San Diego, CA; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; sister, Loretta Molliconi of Littleton, CO and brother, Lindy Coffee of Evansville, IN. Curtis was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Norma Chartier. In keeping with Curtis’ wishes he will be cremated and his ashes spread at sea. As each day ended, men at sea counted their blessings for a day’s work well done and to mark the end of their watch they would toll a bell; the eternal mark passing at sea.  With Shipmate Curtis Coffee’s passing he has completed his final watch; now rest in eternal peace. Keepes Funeral Home is serving the family with the arrangements.  To view Curtis’ tribute wall and leave condolences for the Coffee family, please visit www.KeepesFuneralHome.com.
