Obituary for William R. "Bill" Higgins
William R. “Bill” Higgins, 80, of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of Mount Carmel, Illinois passed away October 11, 2016 at Phoenix VA Healthcare System. He was born October 5, 1936 in Wabash County Illinois the son of Elmer and Gladys (Couch) Higgins.
Bill enjoyed a diversified work experience which includes farming, public service (county clerk) and many years in sales to county governments until his retirement. Bill had a love for traveling. After moving from Mount Carmel he lived in and explored many cities in the United States. His research and planning of trips gave him much joy. Bill greatly enjoyed volunteering wherever he found the opportunity. He never stopped learning. Bill enjoyed completing a wide variety of college courses all throughout his life. Bill faithfully served his country in the United States Army. He was very proud of his family and loved them dearly. He will be greatly missed.
Bill will be remembered by his children, Gena (Kent) Stanhope of Albion, Illinois, Rance (Eva) Higgins of Charleston, Illinois, and Jill (David) Weiler of Cazenovia, New York; grandchildren, Sydney ( Nick) Gracyalny, Emma (Stephen) Garcia , Ben, Seth and Holly Higgins, Maddie, Olivia and Miles Weiler; great-grandchildren, Sophie Garcia and Gideon Gracyalny; former spouse of 31 years, Barbara (Higgins) Singer.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Kate Shepard; brother, Frank Higgins and an infant brother and sister.
Family and friends are invited to gather 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 18, 2016 in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. following Visitation at the Funeral Home with Pastor Nelson Reiber officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made in Bill’s memory to St. Mary’s School, 417 Chestnut St. Mt. Carmel, IL 62863 or Wabash County Historical Society, P.O. Box 911 Mt. Carmel, IL 62863. Envelopes will be at the funeral home or can be mailed to Keepes Funeral Home, 1500 North Cherry Street, Mount Carmel, IL 62863.
