Obituary for Viola L. Kieffer
Viola L. Kieffer, 99, of Mount Carmel, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born December 23, 1916 in Wabash County, the daughter of Joseph Frank and Gertrude (Keepes) Peter. She married Eugene C. Kieffer on November 15, 1939 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on December 23, 1994 after fifty five loving years of marriage.

Viola was a wonderful homemaker and greatly enjoyed gardening, home canning and sewing for her family. She tended to a beautiful flower garden and often shared a bouquet with others to brighten their day. Viola enjoyed playing games with her children and was often a part of a league softball team. Among her hobbies she enjoyed her glass and Hummel collections. In her later years, she enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends. Her grandchildren and great- grandchildren held a special place in her heart. Viola was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She belonged to The Daughters of Isabella and the Red Hat Ladies. Viola was a very loving and caring person. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Viola is survived by her children, Donald and his wife Carol Kieffer, James and his wife Marilyn R. Kieffer, Charles and his wife Mary Ruth Kieffer, Daniel and his wife Kathy Kieffer, Linda and her husband Phil Keepes, Rose and her husband Gary Lewis, and Jeanne and her husband Willy Condol; grandchildren, Karen (Gus) Ikonomopoulos, Ann (David) James, Karl (Peggy) Kieffer, Brad Kieffer, Dean Kieffer, Bryan (Patty) Kieffer, Rayna Kieffer, Juli (Fred) Purcell, Doug (Erika) Kieffer, Andy (Annie) Morris, Molly Morris, Andria Camacho, Jaime Kiefer, Jessica (Preston) Kieffer, Justin Kieffer, Kate (Josh) Gayer, Jake (Caitlin) Keepes, Gabriel (Kristin) Williams, Jonathan (Brandi) Williams, Tracie Arthur, Gary Jr. Lewis, Clay Condol and Peter Condol; thirty two great-grandchildren; sisters in-law Louise Peter and Rosemary Kieffer; and many loved cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband Eugene, Viola was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Patricia Kieffer; sisters, Mary Kieffer and Dorothy Peter; brothers, John and Joe Peter.

Family and friends may gather on Thursday, May 12, 2016 from 4:00p.m. – 8:00p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 125 West 5th St. A Rosary Service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, May 13, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church with Father Robert Zwilling officiating, assisted by Deacon Charlie Speaks. Burial will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband.

Memorial contributions may be made in Viola’s memory to the Eugene C. Kieffer Charitable Organization (E.C.K.C.O), which held a special place in Viola’s heart, St. Mary’s School Renovations, or St. Mary’s Endowment Fund. Envelopes will be at the Church or can be mailed to Keepes Funeral Home, 1500 North Cherry Street, Mount Carmel, IL 62863.
