Obituary for Richard L. Xanders
Richard L. Xanders, 79, of Mount Carmel, IL passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN.
He was born on March 6, 1936 in Wabash County, IL the son of James and Liddie May (Davis) Xanders. Richard married Carmen Joyce Xanders and she preceded him in death in 2013. Richard and Carmen owned and operated the Home Café in Mount Carmel. They enjoyed spending time with their family and travelling.
Richard faithfully served his country in the United States Air Force. He never knew a stranger and will always be remembered for his kindness to others. He loved travelling and camping in his motorhome with Carmen until her passing and then with his loving companion Susie. He was also a collector of all things and enjoyed the treasures he found. In the 1960’s Richard and his brother Harry owned and operated a water tank service. He retired from Emge in Fort Branch where he was a meat inspector for the USDA. Richard loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren and treasured the time he spent with them. He enjoyed his morning coffee and visiting with his friends at McDonalds and Fast Break in Mount Carmel. He was a member of the Mount Carmel Church of Christ.
He is survived by his daughters, Denise (Charley) Wilson and Belinda (Vernon) Higginson both of Mount Carmel; grandchildren, Susan (Vic) Hawkins, Skyler (Niomi) Padgett, Leah (Jared) Sellers, Kiley (Steve) Alka and Jessica (Seth) Woodason; great grandchildren, Destiny Padgett, Holly Hawkins, Ethan Sellers, Evie Sellers, Blaine Tucker Hawkins, Ava Alka, Chloe Alka, Lauren Woodason and Mason Alka; loving companion, Susie Kennard; several nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carmen; brother, Harry Xanders; sister, Lucy Faye Hill; and grandson, Shad Padgett.
In keeping with Richard’s wishes, he will be cremated. A private family service was held in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home where his family gathered and celebrated Richard’s life. A Graveside Service for Richard will be held at a later date in Lick Prairie Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made in Richard’s memory to the Mount Carmel Church of Christ, 2400 North Cherry Street, Mount Carmel, IL 62863 or to a charity of your choice.
