Obituary for Leonard W. "Bill" Ballard
Leonard W. "Bill" Ballard, 89, of rural Mount Carmel, IL passed away peacefully on Monday, April 24, 2017 at his residence north of Bellmont with his loving family by his side. He was born on November 19, 1927 in Bellmont, IL the son of Leonard J. and Cleo (Putnam) Ballard. Bill married Irma Windes in 1949 at Allendale, IL and together they enjoyed sixty eight years of marriage centered around their family.
Bill was a 1944 graduate of Bellmont High School and a 1945 graduate of Mount Carmel High School. Immediately following high school graduation, Bill at the age of seventeen joined the United States Navy. He faithfully served during World War II in the Pacific Theater for one year. He also worked in the oilfield until assuming the operation of his father's farm in 1950. He was a lifelong grain and livestock farmer in Wabash and Edwards Counties. He also served as an ASCS Committeeman and a Drainage District Commissioner. Bill will be missed by his family and friends.
Bill will be remembered by his loving wife, Irma Ballard of Mount Carmel; four sons, Mark Ballard and his wife Lana of Mt. Vernon, IL, James Ballard and wife Tammy of Albion, IL, Daniel Ballard and wife Debra of Knoxville, TN and Phillip Ballard and wife Ada of Mount Carmel; nine grandchildren and eight great granddaughters.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; one brother and one sister.
In keeping with Bill's wishes he will be cremated. Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 1, 2017 at Bethel Cemetery in Bellmont, IL with Pastor David Shain officiating with Full Military Honors.
