Joseph Herman “Joe” Berberich, 76, of Mount Carmel, IL passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at his residence with his loving family by his side. Joe was born on September 23, 1940 in Wabash County, IL the son of Herman and Estella (Brumleve) Berberich where he was raised on the family farm with his family and ten siblings. He was a graduate of Mount Carmel High School Class of 1958. He went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Agriculture from SIU Carbondale in 1964 where he was part of the agricultural honorary fraternity Alpha Zeta. Joe extended his studies at U of I Urbana-Champaign. He also served in the Air Force ROTC during his college career.

Joe married Margaret Lucille Wargel on November 22, 1969 in Evansville, IN. Joe and Marge enjoyed forty seven years of marriage devoting their time to family. Joe will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather by his family. He loved attending his children’s sporting events especially wrestling and volleyball games and was their number one fan always cheering and encouraging them. Joe was a true teacher at heart and he found great joy teaching his grandchildren new things. Everyone that knew Joe respected and admired his integrity. He had a very gentle and kind manner about him and was detail oriented.

Following Joe’s graduate studies he was the high school Ag teacher in Teutopolis, IL for two years where he was involved in FFA Future Farmers of America. Upon moving back to Mount Carmel, Joe devoted over thirty years to the students at Wabash Valley College where he was the founding instructor for the Coal Mining Technology Program. He also was an instructor for Amax Coal Company where he earned the nickname “Firebug” while presenting the Magic of Fire Program. He was a faithful member of Oasis Assembly of God in Princeton, IN where he served as a board member and also taught Sunday school. Among Joe’s hobbies he enjoyed playing softball, gardening and being outdoors.

Joe will be remembered by his loving wife, Marge Berberich of Mount Carmel, IL; son, John Berberich and wife Kim of Villa Park, IL; two daughters, Julie Goldman and husband Russ of Mount Carmel and Alicia Tinsley and husband Ron of Mount Carmel; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Moriah Berberich, Madeline and Marissa Goldman, Grayson and Camden Tinsley; siblings, Flo Bale of Evansville, IN, Elmer (Ellen) Berberich of Evansville, IN, Frank Berberich of Mount Carmel, Charlie (Mary) Berberich of Mount Carmel, Pat (Charlie) Naas of Ridgeway, IL, Mary (Bob) Hayden of Evansville, IN and Paul (Phyllis) of Henderson, KY; sister in law, Norma Berberich of Mount Carmel; many loved nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Estella Berberich; siblings, Sister Florian Berberich, Ralph Berberich and Eloise Berberich; brother in law, John Bale.

Family and friends are invited to gather from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 8, 2017 in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 9, 2017 in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Marsh officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Mount Carmel, IL.

Memorial contributions may be made in Joe’s memory to Oasis Assembly of God Church, 1104 S Stout St, Princeton, IN 47670. Envelopes will be at the funeral home or can be mailed to Keepes Funeral Home, 1500 North Cherry Street, Mount Carmel, IL 62863.
