Obituary for John Robert Harris
John Robert Harris, 75, of Mount Carmel, Illinois passed away Monday, August 29, 2016 surrounded with his family’s love at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville, Indiana. He was born July 12, 1941 in Mount Carmel, Illinois the son of Robert L and Mary Fern (Allen) Harris. John married the love of his life, Marilyn (Keepes) Harris on November 9, 1963.
John retired from Potter and Brumfield as a Quality Control Supervisor after working there for thirty years. He was an active and faithful member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church near Bellmont, Illinois and a member of the American Society of Quality Control, the Knights of Columbus, the American Bee Keepers Association and the National Rose Garden Society. John loved his home where he tended to his fruit trees, vegetable garden and flowers. He was an avid gardener and was always quick to share his love of gardening and advice with those needing tips. He was a hobby carpenter and a man of many talents and skills who shared his passion for knowledge with his family and friends. Spending time with his grandchildren was his favorite pastime and they will miss the rides on the lawnmower, his gentle nature and his famous black cow desserts.
John will be remembered lovingly by his wife of fifty two years, Marilyn; his daughter, Joyce (Dave) Cox; his son, Bradley (Dana) Harris and his five grandchildren, Samantha, Danielle & Nicole Cox and Jonathan & Genevieve Harris of St. Louis, Missouri; also surviving are several brothers and sisters in-law; numerous nieces & nephews and many many friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Joe Allen Harris.
Family and friends are invited to gather 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 31, 2016 in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home. A Rosary Service will be held at 7:00 p.m., immediately following visitation.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 1, 2016, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church with Father Robert Zwilling officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at St. Sebastian Catholic Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in John’s memory to St. Sebastian Church, 4921 N 1400 Blvd, Mt. Carmel, IL 62863 or to you charity of choice. Envelopes will be at the funeral home or can be mailed to Keepes Funeral Home, 1500 North Cherry Street, Mount Carmel, IL 62863.
