Obituary for Harold R. Whitten, Jr.
Harold R. Whitten, Jr. 78, of Mount Carmel, IL passed away on Friday, November 18, 2016 at Deaconess Main Campus in Evansville, IN surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on May 4, 1938 in Wabash County, IL the son of Harold and Gertrude (Jones) Whitten, Sr. He married Joyce McTaggart on August 11, 1956 and they just celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Harold and Joyce enjoyed family vacations and exploring many cities in the United States.
Harold was very proud of his family and he was always putting them first. Spending time with his grandchildren always put a smile on his face. He was a graduate of Mount Carmel High School Class of 1956. Harold was a true outdoorsman and enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting with his family and friends. Among his hobbies he enjoyed woodworking and handcrafting. He worked at Snap on Tools as a machinist for forty years. He will be missed by his family and all who knew him.
Harold will be remembered by his loving wife of sixty years, Joyce Whitten of Mount Carmel, IL; two sons, Melvin Whitten and wife Pam, Curtis Whitten and wife Tammy both of Mount Carmel; daughter, Cindy Schonaman and husband Donald of Browns, IL; four grandchildren, Jessica Perry and husband Gary, Lucas Whitten, John Schonaman and Matthew Whitten and wife Kelly; five great grandchildren, Andrew Schonaman, Kelsey and Aleeah Perry, Reagan Schonaman and Ava Whitten; brothers, Gilbert Whitten and wife Loretta of Mount Carmel, Tom Whitten and wife Vineta of Highland Village, TX, Jim Whitten and wife Linda of Mount Carmel and Wayne Whitten and wife Teresa of Mount Carmel; sisters, Mary Hocking Gilbert and husband Bob Perkins of Seymour, IN and Pat Hinterscher of Olney, IL; sister in law, Clara Whitten of Prestonsburg, KY; many loved cousins, nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Rebecca Whitten; and brother, Charles Whitten.
Family and friends are invited to gather 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Monday, November 21, 2016 in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home and on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 from 8:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
Funeral Services for Harold will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 22, 2016 with Pastor Deron Colgan officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Mount Carmel.
Memorial contributions may be made in Harold’s memory to Eugene C. Kieffer Charitable Organization (E.C.K.C.O). Envelopes will be at the funeral home or can be mailed to Keepes Funeral Home, 1500 North Cherry Street, Mount Carmel, IL 62863.
