Obituary for Bernadette "Bernie" Dodge
Bernadette “Bernie” Dodge, 81, of Mount Carmel, IL passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2015, in Oak Park, IL, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on January 19, 1934 in Evansville, IN, the daughter of George R. and Hilda M. (Frank) Schauman.
She married Joseph R. Dodge on July 25, 1953 in Evansville, IN. He preceded her in death on September 20, 2007.
Bernie was a caretaker and enjoyed caring for others. She loved her family and treasured her time with them. Bernie enjoyed being outdoors and especially loved gardening. She was an active member at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mount Carmel, IL. She will be missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Joseph R. “Bob” (Doretta) Dodge of Allendale, Allyson (George) Margelin of Mount Carmel, IL, Beth (Christa Hinton) Dodge of Oak Park, IL, and Ann Dodge of Makanda, IL; six grandchildren, Andrea Heiken (deceased), Joshua Fisher, Melissa Fisher, Zoe Dodge-Rice, Ella Dodge and Clara Dodge; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Jacqueline Woolsey of Evansville, IN, Beverly (David) Berensen of Raleigh-Durham, NC; many nieces and nephews.
Bernie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph R. Dodge; siblings, George Schauman, Madonna Wentzel, Yvonne Buck, Donald Schauman and Josette Berry.
Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m., Monday November 2, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will begin at 11:30 a.m., with Father Robert Zwilling officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Church after the burial.
Memorial contributions may be made in Bernie’s memory to St. Mary’s Catholic School 417 Chestnut Street, Mount Carmel, IL 62863 or to Rainbow Hospice, 1601 N Western Ave, Park Ridge, IL 60068. Envelopes will be at the Church or can be mailed to Keepes Funeral Home, 1500 North Cherry Street, Mount Carmel, IL 62863.
