Obituary for Audrey Faye Hinderliter

Audrey Faye (Locke) Hinderliter, 79, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 20, 2022 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on February 16, 1943 in Wabash County, IL, the daughter of Barton K. and Mildred L. (Rigg) Locke. Audrey graduated from Mount Carmel High School Class of 1961 and continued her education at Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing and devoted many years as a critical care nurse until her retirement.


Audrey married Richard Stenberg and following his passing on January 8, 2000 she later married Harold C. Hinderliter on February 14, 2006. She had a passion for genealogy research and was personally responsible for over sixty members to the Mt. Carmel Chapter NSDAR who in turn honored Audrey with a Daughters Tribute to NSDAR in 2016. She was a member of the American Legion and Fraternal Orders of the Eagles Auxiliary. Audrey was a lifetime member of Wabash County Historical Society, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Society of Descendants of Lady Godiva. She was also proud to be a member of National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, National Daughters of the Union, United States Daughters of 1812 and also the United Daughters of the Confederacy.


Audrey was a member of Bellmont Methodist Church. The Lord’s Prayer was her favorite Prayer and Psalm 23 was her favorite Bible passage. Audrey loved her family and treasured her time spent with them. She was very proud of her Country and her heritage. Audrey loved horses and followed horse racing. She will be missed by her family and all who knew her.


Audrey will be remembered by her husband, Harold Hinderliter; sons, Davin H. (Becky) Lewis; Duane (Debra) Lewis; step daughter, Stacy (Jeff) Boone; grandchildren, Kaycee Lewis, Tristan (Shea) Lewis, and Chase Lewis; brother, Jackie (Sherry) Locke; step grandchildren, Jordan (Ben) Talley and Justin (Laura) Boone; step great grandchildren, Boone Talley, Jo Talley, and George T. Boone; nephews, Gregory Locke, Rick Locke, Matthew King, and Jonathan King; nieces, Ranell Locke, Giziel Locke, Felicia Locke, and Kimberly McRoberts; sisters-in-law, Barbara Locke and Helen Locke; brother-in-law, David King; many loved cousins and dear friends.


Audrey was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Hubert E. Locke, and Raynold E. Locke; sister, Mary Lou King; and nephew, David Locke.


Family and friends are invited to gather for a Visitation from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 25, 2022, in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home.


Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 25, 2022, in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home with Minister Jeff Boone officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery.


Memorial contributions may be made in Audrey’s memory to Safe Haven. Envelopes will be at the funeral home or can be mailed to Keepes Funeral Home, 1500 North Cherry Street, Mount Carmel, IL 62863.
